All use of radioactive materials at Southeast Missouri State University is governed by the Southeast Missouri State University Radiation Protection Plan and Supporting Procedures.   All work is done by or under the supervision of Authorized Users who have been approved by the Southeast Radiation Safety Committee.    Individuals wishing to become Authorized Users may contact the Radiation Safety Officer for information.

ALARA POLICY STATEMENT

(AS LOW AS REASONABLY ACHIEVABLE)

The goal of the Southeast Missouri State University (Southeast) ALARA program is to provide for the radiological safety of radioactive material (RAM) users, other occupationally exposed personnel, and the University community by limiting all exposures to ionizing radiation whether occupational or non-occupational, individual or collective, to the lowest reasonably achievable level.

The University Administration has a strong commitment to the reduction of radiation exposure, including the review of initial design of laboratory work practices and all proposed modifications with the goal of having the ALARA concept incorporated to the maximum extent practicable.

The University Administration provides an opportunity for the University community to participate in the ALARA Program through the establishment of a suggestion program. This program is designed to involve the individual in the decision making process for tasks involving occupational exposure.  Routine responsibilities for all RAM users include compliance with requirements of work permits, procedures and training, and participation in Pre- and Post-Experiment Reviews.

The University acknowledges its responsibility to incorporate the ALARA concept in all phases of laboratory and employee activities.

The ALARA Program contains the following elements:

  • Pre and Post Experiment Reviews

  • Establishment of a Radiation Safety Committee (RSRC)

  • ALARA Design Change / Site Work Modification Reviews

  • Tracking and Trending of Occupational Exposures

  • Review of Radiological Incident and Deficiency Reports

  • ALARA Suggestion Program

Training

All personnel using radioactive materials or frequenting areas where radioactive materials are used or stored are required to be trained in accordance with the Southeast Missouri State University Radiation Protection Plan and Supporting Procedures and NRC regulations.   This training is provided by the RSO and supplemented by procedure specific training by Authorized Users.   Contact the RSO for further information.    Training for individuals who may have incidental reasons for entering restricted areas may be requested from the RSO.
