Coefficients of

Inbreeding and Consanguinity

For the offspring of half-sibs (Orville), the coefficient of inbreeding is 1/8.  The path connecting Orville's parents is:

Bud - Sally - Mabel

There are three individuals, so the coefficient is (1/2)3, or 1/8.  This is the only path between Bud and Mabel, so that's F for Orville or f for Bud and Mabel.

Twice this, or 1/4, is the approximate proportion of genes that are identical by descent in Bud and Mabel.

Okay, now are you ready for a more challenging pedigree?  The one below shows actual individuals (distant relatives of mine, all now deceased) and their relationships.

Mary and Margaret are full siblings -- it's easiest to follow the paths if you draw them from each parent to each child, as I've done above.  Can you figure out Anna's F value?

Try it, then check the answer.
